Insight into Understanding

The reading and understanding of texts is probably the most important learning activity in higher education. Doblaev (1984, p. 12) feels it is obvious that “... the cultivation of skills to handle study texts and to understand them, is of great importance to the development of the creative activity in opposition to merely acquiring an amount of knowledge”. He states, as does Brudnyi (cf. Doblaev, 1984, p. 19), that the problem of understanding texts reveals two basic, allied aspects:
  • A psychological analysis of the object of the activity (the text)

  • The study of the psychic activity itself (the process of understanding the text)
