Abstract

This paper is based on a review of the recent (since 1980) English and French literature. Its aim is, first, to look at the level of risk of unfavorable long-term outcome for full-term (>36 weeks of gestation) intrauterine growth-retarded (IUGR) babies (defined, most of the time, as small for gestational age, SGA) and then to look at the antenatal determinants in order to discuss the possible means of prevention and the current state of their evaluation.
