Abstract
The earliest evidence for domesticated forms of plants dates back to about 7000 B.C. (Harlan 1975) when man began to culture those wild plants that he had been collecting as sources for food. The combination of selection by nature and by man resulted in a continuing increase in the diversity of crops. Variability was maintained through the gene flow between the populations of cultivated and wild species.
