Abstract

There is no simpler dynamical problem than that of the overdamped pendulum. Its equation of motion

$$\mathop{{\Theta = \frac{1}{\tau }}}\limits^{ \bullet } \sin \Theta $$

is solved by

$$\tan \frac{{\Theta (t)}}{2} = {{e}^{{t/\tau }}}\tan \frac{{{{\Theta }_{0}}}}{2} $$

  30. It may be appropriate to remark that the phenomenon in question arises only for strong couplings between the central oscillator and the bath; a perturbative treatment of the coupling is there-fore not possible.

  31. There is an interesting strong-coupling anomaly in the effective initial condition for the Wigner function. The Fokker-Planck equation with the generator (23) holds only for t 226B 1/α. In the time interval for 0 2264 t 2248 1; the reduced Wigner function relaxes from W (p, q, O) to Weff (p, q, O) = W(p + (;-) q, q, O). This effective initial condition is accounted for in (25, 26).
