Abstract
Psychiatric rehabilitation starts with the acceptance of the patient, his family members and other close network persons and the acceptance of mental health professionals, of psychiatric impairments and the resulting inability to function at a socially acceptable level without special help. One has to accept that some psychiatric diseases cannot be cured and result in chronic impairments. Rehabilitation consists of a long-term comprehensive approach to offer a) shelter, b) daily activities, and c) social skills and treatment (Figure 1). It must be individually tailored, based on an assessment of handicaps and impairments.
