The Role of Mitochondrial Cytochrome c in Electron Transport

  • Chapter
Cytochromes c

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Molecular Biology ((SSMOL))

Abstract

The location and role of mitochondrial cytochrome c are represented diagrammatically in Fig. 2.1, a scheme which can be applied in a broader way to many bacterial systems (Chap. 3). The intermembrane location was established by several lines of evidence (reviewed in Nicholls 1974) but the means by which cytochrome c conducts electrons between its membrane reductase and oxidase remains controversial and forms the main subject of this chapter. Also controversial is the relative importance of the reactions of cytochrome c with soluble redox systems. This subject will be considered in Section 2.8.
