Der Begriff der Konfiguration stammt ursprünglich aus dem Bereich der Hardware und steht dort für eine bestimmte Gerätezusammenstellung. Im Software-Projektmanagement stellt das Konfigurations-Management eine relativ junge Disziplin dar (Buckle 1982).
