Abstract

When a two-dimensional surface system is quenched from a high-temperature disordered phase to a temperature below its phase transition point a dynamical process of ordering takes place. This problem of domain growth is of fundamental importance in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and has practical applications in many fields, including surface science [1]. In this paper we present preliminary results of a study of domain growth for a model of 0/Pd(110), which exhibits a uniaxial (3×1) phase [2]. This system is modeled by the anisotropic or axial next nearest neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model in a field [3–6].
