Abstract
Theories that have been proposed to describe thermal convection in a moving atmosphere are described and compared. Most of them are time dependent variations of mixing-length theory and most are found to be quite closely related. The differences and similarities are noted. A brief account of the applications to pulsating-star problems is given.
