Organic Parameters

Parameters such as biochemical oxygen demand (e.g. BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) cannot simply be converted into a figure for the total content of organic matter. For this reason, additional overall parameters have been introduced to establish the total content of organically bound carbon (TOC) and the content of dissolved organic carbon DOC. TOC and DOC are precisely defined by the amount of organically bound carbon they contain and can be measured relatively accurately using modern instrumental analysis. However, these two parameters only represent part of the total organic matter and cannot be stoichiometrically converted to give the total figure because the composition of the chemical combination is unknown.
