Abstract
The ASMR for cancer of the ovary was 3.2 in 1963 and 6.0 in 1982. Mortality increased rapidly during this period with an annual increase rate of 4.2%. The frequency of ovarian cancer increases substantially from the age of 30 and reaches its maximum about 60. In 1982 the peak was much higher than in 1963, with 27 deaths per 100000. The age-specific mortality rates have increased with time in all the age groups. There is a pronounced cohort effect with a risk which is several times higher in the youngest birth cohorts. In 1978 ovarian cancer caused the highest mortality rates in Iceland (11.5) and Denmark (10.5) and the lowest in Spain (2.2) and Greece (2.6). With its rate of 5.9, Poland belongs to the medium-risk European countries.
