Summary
For the case of uncertain demand an adaptive multiperiod transportation model is developed via methods of adaptive dynamic programming. Typical computational difficulties concerning dynamic programming algorithms are lowered by use of:
-
mixed linear-quadratic cost functions
-
state variables with linear system equation
For the case that no restrictions are imposed on control and state variables an optimal policy is derived. Including additional restrictions concerning the available transportation capacity a secon model is established, where it is possible to compute a suboptimal policy (open-loop-optimal-feedback policy). The objective functio in both models is the expected value of total costs over a finite number of periods.
