Abstract
In the first volume of the Bunker Climate Atlas of the North Atlantic Ocean, we presented maps of the observed meteorological parameters as given in the original Bunker data set. It was our primary intention to publish Bunker’s original results of air-sea interaction parameters without corrections, except perhaps for some comments. However, in the course of the project it appeared useful to recalculate air-sea interactions taking into account improved parameterisations and removal of biases of observations. Hence, instead of reproducing maps of Bunker’s results, we used his excellent data set of observations and derived products to provide an improved set of air-sea interactions. The recalculation of air-sea interaction parameters as described in this volume has the character of a completion of Bunker’s work. We consider evidence for improvements which were mainly not available to Bunker at the time when he decided on the methods to be used. We include Bunker’s name in the title of this volume in appreciation of his primary excellent work as a basic contribution to this atlas. Certain features of regional and annual variations of the air-sea interaction fields differ from the results of Bunker which have found a widespread distribution already.
