How to evaluate the results of neuromodulative procedures in pain ?

Abstract

Evaluation of pain treatment, be it neuromodulative or some other treatment, is no trivial affair. Already in 1959, Beecher, an anesthesiologist, wrote a remarkable article far in advance of his time, “The measurement of pain” (1). Since this pioneering publication, important progress has been made in the field of pain measurement. It has become recognised that pain is a complex and multi-dimensional experience that is co-determined by affective, motivational and environmental factors. This has led to the development of new instruments for pain assessment that take into account these various aspects. The interested reader can find an extensive overview of the different aspects of pain assessment in some recently published textbooks (3, 16).
