Summary

Malignant tumors of vascular origin which cause occlusion of the vessel lumen are rare. The case of a 54-year-old African male complaining of intermittent claudication of the left leg resulting from vascular occlusion by an infiltrating malignant fibrous histiocytoma is presented. Angiographically, occlusion of the external iliac and common femoral artery with sufficient collateralization was visualized. The patient initially refused the advised revascularization, but 6 months later eventually aggreed to the surgical procedure. Intraoperatively, a tumor of three centimeters in diameter occluding the common femoral artery by infiltration of the vessel was found. Although the whole tumor and the infiltrated portion of the vessel had been resected, recurrence due to preoperative tumorembolization occurred. Microscopic examination of the surgical specimens revealed the diagnosis of a malignant fibrous histiocytoma.
