Summary

Intraoperative dilatation followed by vascular reconstructive surgery gives good results with low rates of patient morbidity and mortality. This is especially true for iliac dilatations which have a primary patency rate between 60 and 70% after 3 years, depending on the operative intervention. According to our results, iliac dilatation followed by a femoropopliteal PTFE bypass gives the same patency rate as implantation of a PTFE bypass behind a non-stenotic iliac artery.

The results of an operative procedure followed by femoropopliteal dilatation in our patients are discouraging and cannot be recommended.

We see the indication for combined intraoperative dilation followed by vascular reconstructive surgery primarily in high-risk patients with a multilevel arteriosclerotic disease.
