Summary

During the 1970s the prevention of atherosclerosis focused merely on the elimination of risk factors such as nicotine or cholesterine. The use of functional diagnostics like oscillography only identified those plaques which had already caused hemodynamic changes.

At the end of the 1970s, the development of real-time-sonography and duplex-sonography facilitated a first non-invasive diagnostic on early stages of atherosclerosis. Moreover, the new color-duplex-sonography made it possible to simultaneously show hardenings of arteria and their hemodynamic effects within a shortened examination.
