Summary

In a controlled randomized study we investigated the influence of a perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis (3 × 5 g Totocillin i.v.) will reduce nosocamial pneumonia after vascular surgery using a abdominal midline incision. The results showed a significant reduction of noscomial pneumonia using prophylaxis. Risks factors to develop a pneumonia are diabetes mellitus, abdominal aneurysm, male and renal dysfunction.
