Abstract

Proteins of animal origin are known to play a role in the occurrence and pathogenesis of idiopathic calcium stone disease of the urinary tract. The increase in intake of protein rich foods in western countries has been suggested to be related to the increased incidence of this type of stone (1, 2, 3). Patients eating diets with a high animal protein content show urine biochemistries more conductive to stone formation (4).
