Am 19. April 1950 führte eine amerikanische Kommission, die sogenannte Atlantic City Convention, Symbole in der Atmungsphysiologie ein. Folgende Leute waren daran maßgeblich beteiligt: Comroe, Cournand, Ferguson, Filley, Fowler, Gray, Heimholt!, Otis, Pappenheimer, Kahn und Riley.
