Abstract

A groundwater contamination case-study including a proposal for its reclamation is presented in this paper. A fifty years old chemical industrial area is located in the case-study region of Estarreja, Portugal. The industrial wastes coming from the factories have been and are still kept in three different waste disposal sites. The liquid effluents, i.e. the industrial waste waters, have been directly rejected to the soil into unlined ditches. In this study, the groundwater pollution extent caused by the industrial activities is assessed for the unconfined superficial aquifer composed by a quaternary sandy formation. An hydraulic pumping system for the reclamation of the polluted groundwater is proposed.

The study, that is briefly presented in this paper, was divided in the following items: (1) regional assessment of the groundwater and soil contamination; (2) review of existing geochemical data and development a preliminary groundwater quality assessment; (3) problem identification and hydrogeological analysis, including mathematical groundwater flow and transport modelling; (4) development of a specific 43 wells monitoring network, sampling and laboratorial analysis for more than 20 different chemical elements; (5) groundwater risk assessment; (6) evaluation of potential remedial actions and (7) modelling and design of an hydraulic pumping system for the contaminated groundwater recovery in the case-study area.
