Abstract

The concept of the geoid, originally introduced by Gauss and Listing, is inconsistent with the methods of geoid modelling used in Geodesy. The reason is, that the implicit/explicit choice of a simple mass density model used for the reduction of surface gravity data can deviate from the physical reality. The (possible) inconsistency is valid at all frequencies. Some ideas of how to handle these problems in modelling are put forward.
