Abstract

Microsurgery is relevant to all surgical specialties. It has evolved to be of high value in the experimental laboratory where rats and mice have always been ideal models because of their convenience in handling and the availability of inbred strains. Operations of great complexity can be performed with minimal instrumentation in the rat by the expanded vision provided by surgical microscopes. Therefore the type and quality of the microsurgical instruments are of special importance whenever microsurgical procedures are being performed. This chapter presents a short outline of the standard set of microsurgical instruments needed for most procedures in rat surgery. In addition, we describe a stepwise training program for microsurgical procedures.
