Pancreas Transplantation in Rats

  • Chapter
Organtransplantation in Rats and Mice

Abstract

Pancreatic transplantation has now become an established and relatively safe procedure for the cure of diabetes. While 15 years ago estimates of 1-year graft survival were only 21% [12], the many alterations in immunosuppression and surgical procedure that have been made have improved this figure to over 80% [4]. This improvement has been the result mainly of experimental evaluations in microsurgical models. Technical considerations such as drainage of the exocrine secretion have been thoroughly investigated in rat models [7], and inbred rat combinations have served as models for immunological questions.
