Zusammenfassung

Die Prävalenzraten bevölkerungsrepräsentativer Studien legen zunächst die Vermutung nahe, daß die somatoformen Störungen für das Gesundheitssystem nur von geringer Bedeutung sind und ihnen im Klinikalltag nur eine Randbedeutung zukommt. Diesem Schluß widersprechen jedoch die Ergebnisse klinischer Stichproben. Nach Schätzungen können 20–80% der in Arztpraxen geschilderten Beschwerden nicht oder nicht hinreichend auf organische Ursachen zurückgeführt werden (Kellner, 1985; Rief & Hiller, 1992). Weniger restriktive Kriterien zur Erfassung der Symptomatik führen zu hohen Fallzahlen mit für die klinische Praxis relevanten Ausprägungen der Störung. Bezüglich der für die somatoformen Störungen prototypischen Somatisierungsstörung und des damit verbundenen Symptomindexes SSI 4,6 liegt die umfangreichste empirische Basis vor. Aus diesem Grund wird nachfolgend auf diese Störungskategorie am ausführlichsten eingegangen.
