Abstract

To a very large extent, the river Danube lends the regions and states in central and south-eastern Europe their specific characteristics. Even though no commonly accepted notion of a Danube space exists as yet, the hydrographic catchment area of the river, which extends over more than 800,000 square kilometres, seems to have become the object of ever growing interest for a great number of disciplines, e.g. political, economical, ecological and cultural.
