Quality Control and GPS

GPS for Geodesy

Abstract

As in many other sciences, empirical data are used in geodesy to make inferences about physical reality. In order to get a workable hypothesis, we try to capture the conglomerate of physical reality by means of a mathematical model. This model consists of two parts: the functional model and the stochastic model. By means of the functional model, we try to describe the relations that are believed to exist between the observables themselves or between the observables and the unknown parameters of the model. The stochastic model is used to capture the expected uncertainty or variability of the empirical data. Philosophically speaking, every model is misspecified. The question of the model’s validity is therefore not one of proving its correctness, but rather one of showing whether the mathematical model, given its intended purposes, is sufficiently consistent with the data observed.
