Abstract

Wheal Jane is an abandoned underground tin mine in south-west England. Extensive mining began in the area in the early seventeenth century, reaching its peak in the mid-nineteenth century when the region was the largest producer of copper in the world. The industry subsequently went into decline, and, with the closure of Wheal Jane in 1991, there is currently only one tin mine remaining in operation in Cornwall.
