Abstract
A unique feature of the antigenicity of glycolipids is that the specificity of antibodies produced against them is mostly determined by the carbohydrate moiety. In general, glycolipids are poorly antigenic and to improve the immune response the lipid is often coupled to some inert support such as serum albumin or is injected in the form of a liposome with phospholipid and cholesterol. None of these supports is completely inert and often the immune response is weak. In an attempt to improve antigenicity the ganglioside GM1 and sulphatide have been coupled to glass beads using a heterobifunctional crosslinking agent recently described (1).
