Gangliosides as Autoantigens and Differentiation Antigens

Gangliosides and Modulation of Neuronal Functions

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIH,volume 7))

Abstract

In this article I shall briefly review our studies on gangliosides, glycolipids and related glycoconjugates that are target antigens of monoclonal autoantibodies in sera of patients with autoimmune haemolytic disorders. These natural monoclonal autoantibodies are known as cold autoagglutinins because they cause intense agglutination of erythrocytes in the cold (ie below body temperature). They are of unusual interest, first, because their specificities involve carbohydrate differentiation antigens on erythrocytes and other cell types, and, second, they have provided clues to the pathogenesis of autoantibody production following infections.
