Genetic Regulation of Ganglioside Expression

Abstract

The remarkable heterogeneity of the carbohydrate structures in glycoconjugates, especially glycolipids, has been well demonstrated and it is also well known that the expression of the carbohydrate structures changes in the process of embryogenesis, cell cycle, cellular differentiation and malignant transformation (1, 2). We assume that there must be regulation mechanisms producing such heterogenous structures and also control mechanisms, which determine the timing of activation of these regulation mechanisms for changing the expression.
