Quantum Diffusion Above Θ Debye /2

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Springer Proceedings in Physics ((SPPHY,volume 17))

Abstract

Two different approaches to the quantum theory of diffusion, the perturbative approach of Flynn and Stoneham and the occurrence-probability ansatz of Holstein, are compared in their common range of validity T ⩾ Θ Debye /2. It will be shown that they give the same results for small transfer integrals J. For large J the perturbative approach breaks down while the occurrence-probability ansatz still holds and the corresponding jump rate obeys an Arrhenius law in agreement with experimental observations.
