Abstract

From the foregoing it will be apparent that relative to its weight, the carotid body has attracted an enormous amount of attention. Despite this, we are still largely ignorant of the precise role played by in the overall control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and the method by which it responds to changes in blood chemistry. The application of sophisticated biophysical techniques, pioneered by Eyzaguirre’s group, may help our understanding of the mechanisms that operate in the carotid body.
