Gastritis

Abstract

The term varioliform gastritis (VG) was first proposed by Moutier and Martin in 1947 to describe a gastric condition presenting a subacute course and characterized by the widespread presence of numerous mucosal bulges with or without a central depression or erosion, sometimes associated with fundic fold hyperplasia. Subsequently, numerous other expressions were used to indicate this type of lesion, namely: “erosive gastritis” (Kawai et al. 1970); “complete erosion” (Roesch and Ottenjann 1970); “verrucous gas-tritis” (Sano 1974); “focal foveolar hyperplasia” (Elster et al. 1978); and “gastric pseudopolyps” (Krentz 1975).
