Abstract
It is generally accepted that carcinogenesis can be divided into two stages, tumor initiation and promotion. Since these stages can be caused by compounds specific to each, there seem to be two independent processes that are responsible for initiation and promotion. Initial studies of the promotion process utilized croton oil. Today phorbol esters isolated from croton oil as its active components, as well as synthetic analogs with a range of tumor-promoting activity are used for studies of the mechanism of tumor promotion.
