Regulation of the Immune and Nonimmune Aging Process by the Major Histocompatibility Complex

Abstract

Each species displays a characteristic maximum life span which is genetically determined and more or less independent of environmental influences, so long as the population size is large enough; for example, in man about 110 years, in the chimpanzee 55 years, and in mice 3½ years. By contrast, the average life span or “life expectancy” is influenced at least as much by environment, lifestyle, or health habits as by genetic endowment. These actuarial distinctions are important in understanding aging as a biologic phenomenon reflected in survival patterns.
