Abstract

Although the term “penumbra” has been used since 1977 [1] to describe an ischemic boundary zone characterized by suppression of electrophysiological function with complete or near-complete preservation of extracellular potassium homeostasis, there is continued uncertainty regarding its nature and extent, and hence its significance in relation to the management of cerebral ischemia as it presents in man.
