Abstract

The general interpretation of the interactions of photons with the electrons of atoms or solids in arbitrary light intensity range is one of the fundamental tasks of QED. In this context there has recently been renewed interest in these processes in the extremely high laser intensity range. In connection with these processes we very often meet in the literature the expression “optical tunnelling”. In the following, we shall discuss the problem without any claim to completeness, rather to give a short outline and to expose it for discussion.
