Abstract

A single autosomal locus in a Hardy-Weinberg population reaches equilibrium in one generation, at genotypic frequencies that are simple functions of the frequencies of the alleles. Suppose, however, that we are interested in genotypes at two different loci at the same time. We may want to predict the frequencies of combinations of traits controlled by two loci; or two loci may both act upon the same trait, the phenotype of an individual being determined by the interaction between genotypes at the two loci. As we shall see later, quantitative traits, of great importance to plant and animal breeders, are inherited by the combined effects of a number of loci.
