Abstract

Astronomy has for a long time past been engaged in the exploration of the galaxy. With the passage of time, new aspects have repeatedly come to the foreground of interest and nowadays, as before, objects and processes in our Milky Way system are central themes of research. The following introduction contains a brief survey of the diverse questions and their history. This should facilitate the approach to the more detailed presentations in later chapters.
