Part of the book series: Progress in Botany/Fortschritte der Botanik ((BOTANY,volume 48))

Abstract

Symbiosis was originally defined in 1879 by Anton de BARY as an intimate and long-lasting “Zusammenleben ungleichnamiger Organismen”. Consequently, the term comprises mutualistic, neutralistic, and parasitic systems (cf. GOFF 1982). Cytosymbiosis is symbiosis at the cellular level. It can be either epicytic (extracellular or intercellular: Epicytobiosis) or intracellular (endocytic; Cytobiosis: TAYLOR 1979; Endocytobiosis: cf. SMITH et al. 1984), with many transitions between extreme cases (cf. , e.g., STARR 1975), and quite different grades of interdependence of the partners (nonobligatory, obligatory, established, organelle status; cf. SITTE 1983). The present review will be focused primarily on mutualistic and intracellular symbiotic systems with one of the partners being phototrophic. Epicytic and/or parasitic systems, as well as entirely heterotrophic cytosymbioses will be considered only if contributions to more general questions emerge from their study.
