Abstract

Extending a study of PILET (1982), who showed that the dimension of the maize root cap was correlated with the extent of the graviresponse, MOORE (1985c, e), MOORE and PASENIUK (1984a, b), and RANSOM and MOORE (1983) in several species found the volume of the statenchyma (central columella, which contains the gravity-perceiving cells) to be a critical factor for graviperception. Horizontally growing lateral roots had statenchymas with significantly smaller volume than main roots, whereas the relative volumes of the statenchymas were the same in both root cap types (MOORE 1985b). A possible inability of lateral roots to produce growth-inhibiting substance(s) could be excluded, since after removal of half of the root cap, lateral roots curved toward the remaining half (MOORE and PASENIUK 1984b).
