A Model System for the Study of Fungus — Host Surface Interactions: Adhesion of Phytophthora Megasperma to Protoplasts and Mesophyll Cells of Soybean
Cell surface phenomena are important but little understood aspects of fungal pathogen — host plant interactions (Bracker and Littlefield 1973; Albersheim and Prouty 1975; Keen 1982; Yoshikawa et al 1983; Hermanns and Ziegler 1984; Furuichi et al 1980). Using plasmolysis techniques Nozue et al (1979) demonstrated tight adherence of host plasma membranes (extrahaustorial membranes) to haustoria of Phytophthora infestans in potato and Coffey (1983) has made similar observations with Albugo Candida on cabbage. Physical contact and adhesion seem to be important early steps of infection yet are very little studied in fungal as compared to bacterial systems (e.g. Rao et al 1982; Dazzo and Gardiol 1984; Matthysse 1984; Érsek et al 1985). In all likelihood these processes involve not only surface molecules preformed on the host and parasite surfaces but also induced interactions (e.g. biosynthetic activities) preceding or following the first physical contact.
