Pilzen haben kein Chlorophyll. Sie sind heterotroph und leben saprophytisch, parasitisch oder in Symbiose mit Algen, Farnpflanzen oder Samenpflanzen. Parasitismus führt off eine starke Spezialisierung und Reduktion der vegetativen Stadien mit sich. Dies erschwert die Einstufung mancher Gruppen in ein natürliches System.
