Area Estimation with Systematic Dot Grids
Assume that an area of size A on an aerial (ortho) photograph or map consists of two strata, viz. “forest” (stratum 1 of size A1), and “non-forest” (stratum 2 of size A−A1). The area proportion of stratum 1 then is θ = Al/A, and that of stratum 2 is (A−A1)/A = 1−θ. The shape of stratum 1 is arbitrary.
