Development of Olfactory Epithelium in the Rat

  • Chapter
Ontogeny of Olfaction

Abstract

Several papers have been written on studies of the development of olfactory epithelium in vertebrates, including frogs (Klein and Graziadei 1983), chicks (e.g., Disse 1897; Van Campenhout 1937; Breipohl and Fernandez 1977; Breipohl and Ohyama 1981; Mendoza et al. 1982), mice (e.g., Smart 1971; Breipohl et al. 1973; Cuschieri and Bannister 1975a,b; Kerjaschki and Hörandner 1976; Kerjaschki 1977; Noda and Harada 1981), rats (Menco and Farbman 1985a,b; Farbman 1986), hamsters (Waterman and Meiler 1973; Taniguchi et al. 1982) and humans (O’Rahilly 1967; Bossy 1980; Pyatkina 1982; Nakashima et al. 1984). Most of these reports are primarily descriptive rather than analytical. In this chapter, we shall try to correlate descriptive morphological data on the ontogeny of the rat olfactory epithelium with some biochemical, immunological and physiological studies on early development and maturation
