Abstract
As plasma membranes of cells can hardly be treated in their whole complexity, it is useful to reduce them in terms of a three layer system consisting of (see Fig 1):

1)
The glycocalix (control of the interaction with the environment or with other cells).

2)
The lipid-protein bilayer (location of biochemical membrane processes).

3)
The cytoskeleton (coupling with cytoplasm).
