Ultrasonography of the Neck

Abstract

Ultrasound (US) studies are currently of limited value for all of the pathologies and structures dealt with in this chapter. In addition to oral cavity pathologies, neurogenic tumors, cervical cysts, and cases of local regional spread of cancer to the neck, there are several rare etiologies for which the US pattern is only one of several diagnostic factors or merely confirms the clinical diagnosis. There are also certain US applications whose value has only been recognized rather recently (staging of oral lesions, analysis of speech and the oral phase of swallowing).
