Abstract

The ultrasonographic appearance of the normal salivary glands has already been described in Chap. 1, so the present discussion will detail the nonultrasonographic techniques available for salivary gland studies and review the tumoral and infectious pathologies of these glands together with nontumoral, noninflammatory pathologies. The value of ultrasonogra–phy (US) is most evident in the workup of salivary gland tumors (Baker and Ossoinig 1977; Ballerini et al. 1984; Bruneton et al. 1980; Bruneton and Roux 1984). A limited number of other publications have reported ultrasonography to be effective in the analysis of inflammatory and lithiasic disorders (Bellina 1982; Hajek et a1.1984; Pickrell et a1. 1978).
