Abstract
For convenience, cervical ultrasound can be artificially divided into studies of the anteromedial or visceral compartment, and explorations of the lateral neck. The anteromedial neck was one of the first anatomic regions to benefit from contact ultrasound scanning, and the earliest publications on thyroid sonography date back more than 10 years. Owing to the difficulty in exploring the lateral neck by contact scanning, examination of this region has benefited greatly from the introduction of high frequency, real-time equipment. Thus, the ultrasonic characteristics of nodal and salivary gland pathologies have been defined only recently. This chapter deals successively with ultrasound equipment and technological advances, examination techniques, and the ultrasonic appearance of the normal structures of the neck.
